In short-hydroperiod marshes and swamps of the southeast, sometimes in damp habitats far from open water, the southern leopard frog is the most common species of frog. Those present in peninsular Florida are a subspecies, the Florida leopard frog—one of the few amphibians that enters lightly brackish water, and thus may be found at the edges of mangrove swamps. Despite their jumping agility, leopard frogs are easily caught by many predators, such as the Everglades racer. They are handsomely colored and highly variable (Figure 17.3).
